BURGERS! | SPRING!

Mr. Big Food took the day off today. We worked outside all day. Missy didn't escape and Rocky only bolted off once. Big Day!

And because Mr. Big Food can see into The Future, he had planned a perfect supper: Bucket Potato Salad and Roquefort Burgers.

It's not "Bucket"-- although that's what I first heard and it made sense since you could mix up a big batch and serve it in a bucket-- it's "Banquet."

Here are the Burgers. Fresh Ground Beef. Roquefort mixed into the ground beef.

Obituary

Harry Weathersby Stamps

December 19, 1932 -- March 9, 2013

Long Beach [Mississippi]

Harry Weathersby Stamps, ladies' man, foodie, natty dresser, and accomplished traveler, died on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Harry was locally sourcing his food years before chefs in California starting using cilantro and arugula (both of which he hated). For his signature bacon and tomato sandwich, he procured 100% all white Bunny Bread from Georgia, Blue Plate mayonnaise from New Orleans, Sauer's black pepper from Virginia, home grown tomatoes from outside Oxford, and Tennessee's Benton bacon from his bacon-of-the-month subscription. As a point of pride, he purported to remember every meal he had eaten in his 80 years of life.

The women in his life were numerous. He particularly fancied smart women. He loved his mom Wilma Hartzog (deceased), who with the help of her sisters and cousins in New Hebron reared Harry after his father Walter's death when Harry was 12. He worshipped his older sister Lynn Stamps Garner (deceased), a character in her own right, and her daughter Lynda Lightsey of Hattiesburg. He married his main squeeze Ann Moore, a home economics teacher, almost 50 years ago, with whom they had two girls Amanda Lewis of Dallas, and Alison of Starkville. He taught them to fish, to select a quality hammer, to love nature, and to just be thankful. He took great pride in stocking their tool boxes. One of his regrets was not seeing his girl, Hillary Clinton, elected President.

He had a life-long love affair with deviled eggs, Lane cakes, boiled peanuts, Vienna [Vi-e-na] sausages on saltines, his homemade canned fig preserves, pork chops, turnip greens, and buttermilk served in martini glasses garnished with cornbread.

He excelled at growing camellias, rebuilding houses after hurricanes, rocking, eradicating mole crickets from his front yard, composting pine needles, living within his means, outsmarting squirrels, never losing a game of competitive sickness, and reading any history book he could get his hands on.

Read the rest here. Harry was loved. H/t Instapundit.com

Mississippi Advertising

I love ads.

Every afternoon, the Dogs and I and a box of bonbons and a cup of tea sit down in front of the Television and watch re-runs of Andy Griffith and giggle at the ads targeted at the Target audience, the members of which apparently fall down a lot. Every evening Mr. Big Food and I sit down in front of the Television and watch The Big Bang Theory and giggle at the ads targeted at men who can't get up. Depending on the ad-- targeted at the Television Show Target Audience-- we consumers are addressed as idiots/morons/imbeciles.

I love ads.

My favorite ads are roadside ads-- where the target audience is just folks in cars. The scrolling marquee signs are great!

At Walgreens:

DORITOS! 3 \ $10!! [Inflation]

At Fred's:

LADIE'S UNGRMENTS!! BY 2 GET ONE FREE!! [That's 33% off the lesser priced. No Big deal.]

At The Bank:

5% 2nd Mortgage! BUILD a Deck!!

My most Favorite of All are the low-tech Road Signs. If you live in a city, you have no idea what I'm talking about, but if you are a Country Mouse, you know these signs.

Mostly I just giggle. But this one caught my attention.

I doubled back.

This Morning's Tidbit

Don't mind me!
Early morning adventures are such fun!

In the over-grown pasture, there is a gap between the fence and the ground that is large enough for a large rabbit-- or a mischievous 90 pound mutt-- to crawl under. My plan was to walk with Rocky along the fenceline and around to the gate. Her plan was to jump up, keep us in sight, and shimmy back under the fence. Her plan worked quite well. :-)

And now... . Doggy nap time!

fb | BIG Data

via Instapundit.com:
BIG DATA: Study: Facebook Likes Can Be Used to Determine Intelligence, Sexuality.
Simply by delving into volunteers’ Likes, the researchers could determine in 95 percent of cases whether a person was Caucasian or African American and in 88 percent of cases whether the person was heterosexual or homosexual. They could determine whether the person is Christian or Islamic 82 percent of the time.

The researchers described Facebook Likes as “a generic class of digital record that could be used to extract sensitive information.” Volunteers used the myPersonality Facebook app to track their Likes, which were fed into algorithms to arrive at the results. The data were supported by information from volunteer profiles and personality tests.

Of course some of these Likes are a no-brainer. Liking “Being Gay” is at least a decent indicator of one’s sexuality. Liking Barack Obama means there’s a good chance you’re voting Democratic next time around. This is not exactly rocket science. But some Likes appeared to have zero connection to personal attributes. Sure, curly fries are delicious, but is Liking them the best indicator that you have a high IQ? Also, one of the Likes that helped identify heterosexual men was “Being Confused After Waking Up from Naps.” Is that really a trait only straight men are afflicted with?

While the results can be seen as hilarious for anyone that’s not a Harley-Davidson rider (I kid), the privacy implications are alarming. Facebook Likes are public by default.
Facebook isn’t about privacy.
The Farm doesn't have a Facebook page.

Recipe: Chicken with Roquefort Cheese

Chicken with Roquefort Cheese

1/2 stick butter
4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
2 T flour
1/2 C dry white wine
2 oz. Roquefort cheese, crumbled
1 large garlic clove minced
8 oz. sour cream

Prehaet oven to 350. Brown chicken breasts on both side in melted butter in skillet. Place browned chicken breasts in greased baking dish. Add flour to drippings in skillet and stir to make a smooth roux. Add dry white wine, Roquefort, garlic and sour cream. Cook, stirring until hot and thickened. Spread cheese sauce over chicken in baking dish. Bake covered 1 hour.

Recipe: Consume Rice

We made 1/2 the recipe.

Consume Rice

1/2 stick butter
1 medium onion chopped
1 C rice
1 1/4 C consume; beef or chicken; can used canned
1 1/4 C water

Preheat oven to 350. Melt butter in a baking dish with cover, uncovered in oven. Sprinkle in onion, rice. Combine consume and water. Pour over rice and water. Cover dish and bake 1 hour.

An "Elegant" Wednesday Supper

depicted by decidedly non-elegant photos.

Consume Rice

Chicken with Roquefort Cheese
I asked what the name of the chicken dish was and Mr. Big Food replied and said, "Hold on! I have the recipes in my head right here."

I said, "Go."

But before we get to the recipes, I'd like to comment on "elegance."

This definition misses the point:
el·e·gant  [el-i-guhnt]  Show IPA
adjective
1.
tastefully fine or luxurious in dress, style, design, etc.: elegant furnishings.
2.
gracefully refined and dignified, as in tastes, habits, or literary style: an elegant young gentleman; an elegant prosodist.
3.
graceful in form or movement: an elegant wave of the hand.
4.
appropriate to refined taste: a man devoted to elegant pursuits.
5.
excellent; fine; superior: an absolutely elegant wine.
Where is the reference to an "elegant" proof? An "elegant" mechanism?

My understanding of the word does not juxtapose "fine" and "luxurious."

Go figure. I was wrong.

One lonely voice

has spoken this evening.

Still waiting for the Birthday Girl and A. Leland.

best classic everyone-should-know-it-by-heart line so far?

Birthday Supper

We thought about putting 30 + 52 candles on the cake, but we didn't have that many.
Daughter C got Super Mario Bros for her B'day.

Mr. Bow Tie hooked the Nintendo box up to the Television Set.
We were amazed by the Hi-Def Graphics.
Meanwhile... supper was frying.

Happy Birthday To...

Happy Birthday Mr. Big Food!

MARCH 12 19xx

Happy Birthday Daughter C!

~~

Word on the Street is that I'm baking a three-layer birthday cake tomorrow, and that one of the layers is not like the others.

~~

Happy Birthday also to Mr. Big Food's Mom & I. The operative part of the word-- the part of the word that does the work-- is "birth." :-)

Let's Converse About This: It's Quarter to 10 and I'm Not Sure Where My Children Are

You know what? They are all adults and I don't need to know where my children are. I just would love to have Daughter C's quote from Christoper Wallace replying to Julia Child's lovely quote about cooking and love, and her quote from Lavar Burton, responding to Oscar Wilde. Is this too much to ask?

Here's what Mike Judge (Mr. Big Food) and Quinton Tarentino (Miss M) have to say

If you would have asked me, I would have said the chance of that word appearing in my blog was fairly low.

Miss M tries a 2-fer.*

Documenting the Insanity.

From my Congressman.

Dear Friends,

This week, the House passed a bill that cuts $85 billion, delays implementation of Obamacare, and keeps the government funded through the end of the fiscal year. This is a victory for limited government, but there is much work left to do.

The good news is since Republicans took control of the House, we have cut discretionary spending 10%. The bad news is in those same years, mandatory spending has increased 11%. This is like a family cutting down on going out to eat, but spending even more on car payments and a second mortgage. Even if you are cutting from one area, spending is still going up overall.

Mandatory spending occurs automatically and is two thirds of the budget. It includes Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and welfare programs such as food stamps. Many of these programs are vital to ensuring a safety net for the most vulnerable members of our society, and retirees have paid taxes their entire working lives with the understanding they would receive a certain level of benefits in retirement. However, these programs are growing at an unsustainable rate and, without reform, will bankrupt us. A bankrupt government is not in a good position to help anybody.

Our attention will now turn to the 2014 budget and what we can do to achieve the same success with mandatory spending that we have begun to achieve on the discretionary side. You and I know the budget needs to be balanced and taxes should not be raised in order to do so. The only way to get from the mess we are in now to a balanced budget is addressing mandatory spending.

Stay in touch and God bless,
[my emphasis]

Here is how often we go out to eat..

Sigh. My congressman is a nice enough guy but he ain't no libertarian.

Dear Dog Whisperer | Missy Is Alive!

She's okay.
Turns out if you are a fairly large dog you can eat some Copperhead snake tail and suffer no ill consequences.

I, myself, am repulsed by the smell of a 4-day dead copperhead. Missy, not so much.

Caesar--

I like your show. Mostly.

We had a hard-core revelation this evening.

You should see them now. It's all about observation. Crappy Old Fashioned Science.

I worked that cheese for all it was worth.

Dinner Party Game Conversations Notice

I don't know about you, but I've been enjoying the conversations.

I was looking forward to hearing what Mike Judge (Mr. Big Food) had to say to Alvin Plantinga (A. Leland). Alas, because we did actual real work today, Mr. Big Food will unearth the proper citation for the quote he knows Hank uttered during an episode of King of the Hill, tomorrow. And then the Game will commence.

UPDATED: Happy Birthday Party Daughter C! | Photos with Minimal Captioning

UPDATED with more In-Progress photos below the fold.

I've been sitting on a pile of photos of the TARDIS as a Work-In-Progress and the TARDIS Cake as a Work-In-Progress, and now I get to post them!!

As you know, the TARDIS and the TARDIS cake were transported from the Farm to Starkvegas this afternoon-- and not without incident. Miss M was cited-- as in a ticket-- but it was the Birthday Girl's fault. Anyway... apparently these little cupcakes are evil demons. WHO knew?

Keep Talking... | Dinner Party Conversations

Is this true?

* Kat tried to pull a 2-fer, arguing that her two submitted quotes went hand-in-hand. They did. But she had to choose one. And she did. But because the Rules of the Game are sympathetic to larger issues, here's what Patrick Stewart didn't get  to say:

You may ask, "What are we doin' when we're not playin' games?"

I. Rest. My. Case.

I am in the midst of collecting Conversation Quotes from emails, comments, texts, etc. in the midst of a busy evening. (More on that to follow.) While taking a short timeout, I chatted with Daughter C (WHO's here at the Farm working on the full-scale model Tardis) and Miss M (WHO's working on the cake-scale Tardis), and in spirit, Kat (WHO's on the text line). I commended them on their efforts to source their quotes. This following real life conversation ensued:

Me: Thank you for sourcing your quotes.

Daughter C: I try. It's hard if you're using the internet.

Miss M: It's damned hard, especially it you don't have the book in front of you.

Laughter all around.

Crappy Old CASE. CLOSED.

Robert Johnson Chimes In

I'm not sure if he spoke before or after the filibuster ended-- but it seems a quite appropriate response to Thoreau, don't you think?

WE INTERRUPT ... THIS ... FILIBUSTER

TO ... BRING YOU ... SOME ... CONVERSATIONS

from "an interview"

[Note. I see the missing "." Not A. Leland's fault. I take full responsibility. It was a copy-paste mistake I didn't see until it was way too late to re-do.]

Is it? Sounds like an X-Phi question to me!

Testify.

Yes. We are missing Robert Johnson's (Miss M) reply to H.D. Thoreau (Miss M's Friend). Miss M has been busy making a cake in the shape of a Tardis-- and getting the color quite right, by the way. A jury of her peers voted to cut her some slack. 'Cause, you know, as an American, she has an individual right-- it's hers, you can't take it away-- to be judged by a jury of her peers before the game-rule drones can swoop down and splatter her with Tardis-blue paint balls just 'cause she didn't come up with a Robert Johnson quote.

This is just how things work in a Democratic Republic.

 AND NOW ... BACK ... TO OUR ... REGULARLY SCHEDULED ... FILIBUSTERING ... ... ...

Led by Thomas Jefferson, (UPDATED slightly)

all of our guests have just stood and solemnly said, "Stand with Rand."

#StandWithRand

(His "historic" filibuster of the Senate is on CSPAN right now. It's been going on for over eight hours so far.)

UPDATE: The issue is drones-- targeting Americans, on American soil, who are not imminent threats to others. As there are drones at Mississippi State (!) I am especially interested in this. (Should have mentioned this when I first posted. Sorry. Long day in Memphis.)

What They Said! | The Conversations Continue

I for one couldn't agree more. But I'm anxious to hear how Gordon Ramsey and Robert Johnson will respond.

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Seriously?

As I mentioned just moments ago
[It's a game, people! And here at the Farm we take our games and other silly stuff quite seriously. We need time. No one wants to just blurt something out without thinking first. And speaking of silly stuff... . Work on the Tardis is progressing nicely!]
Customized plans are serious.
Daughter C has asked me to not post any more photos of the Tardis as a Work-in-progress until after the Party. And so I shall just collect photos of the Tardis as a Work-in-Progress and save them up until after the Party.

She did not, however, ask me to not comment. So I shall. HOLY COW! Wait until you see it!!

There's a Tardis cake, courtesy of Miss M, coming soon, too.
~~

I wonder if, after the Party, I might be able to find a permanent home for the Tardis here at the Farm?

At Table 2... | Dinner Party Conversations

James, Keith, Jerry, and Willie have stopped playing and D'vorak has stopped conducting, so folks have begun to chat!

Meanwhile, at Table 1, some Thinkers are thinking about what to say in response to Harper Lee and George Carlin

[It's a game, people! And here at the Farm we take our games and other silly stuff quite seriously. We need time. No one wants to just blurt something out without thinking first. And speaking of silly stuff... . Work on the Tardis is progressing nicely!]

There Will Be No More Playing with Snakes! [Do not read if you don't like snakes]

The dogs and I went for a second walk in the overgrown pasture late this afternoon. This morning it was warm but it started to rain and we had to cut our outing short. I thought it best to take them out again-- especially since it's a busy evening here at the Farm. It was however, considerably colder than this morning. As we were slowing making our way to the gate, something captured Missy's attention and Rocky rushed to investigate. Rocky's startled response indicated to me that I should go investigate as well.

We high-tailed it back to the house and I came back with my camera
which fortunately has a really good zoom!
And yes. That is an adult copperhead. It was about 4' long.

I have no idea whether it was alive or dead or something in between.

Mr. Big Food has commanded the dogs to not play with snakes.

PSA for Mississippians: Two gun-related bills signed

via Y'all Politics:

From the Governor's Press Release

Gov. Phil Bryant today signed into law two measures to protect gun owner rights. House Bill 485, which takes effect immediately, protects personal information collected from applicants for concealed carry permits. House Bill 2, effective July 1, clarifies the legal definition of carrying a concealed weapon.

“In January, I called on House and Senate leaders to take swift action to protect gun owners and the right to arms, and today I am signing two very important gun rights measures into law,” Gov. Bryant said.

House Bill 485, sponsored by Representative Mark Baker (R-Brandon), removes personal information collected from applicants for concealed carry permits from public record requirements. Applicant and permit holder information is still available if ordered by a court.

Let the Conversation Begin

Table 1 is yacking it up!

Mark Twain and Gordon Ramsey are listening in. It'll be interesting to hear what they have to say in response to Jack and Nelle Harper Lee.

Meanwhile... .

As I recall, Henry David had thoughts not all that different from Carlin's, but a few years earlier. But, you know, I'm just a figurative fly on the wall. I'll wait to hear what Miss M's Friend-- who seems to have cornered the corner of Table 1-- chooses Henry to say in response.

The Guests at Table 2 remain silent.

What Are the Odds of This Little Irony?

"What would you like to talk about?"

I was one-upped by Miss M's Friend the other day. I pronounced the Dinner Party Game finished. He countered with a question, "How can we be finished when our guests haven't had any conversations?"

Right he was! How can you have people such as we all invited around a table and then not allow them to converse?

Silly me.

And so... . We have the basic framework of how the Conversation Game will go, we're just working on the Game Board logistics.

To begin...

Why? What? Who?

Why is Battlestar Gallactica playing on a shelf in the workshop?
Because Daughter C and Mr. Bow Tie are working on a project.

What in the world is this box-project in the workshop?
A Tardis!

Who is this Tardis for?
Daughter C! Her Birthday's coming up, don't you know? Her's will be a theme party.

~~

When last I checked, they were still painting add-on boxes to hold the lamp at the top, and were discussing how to properly stencil and paint "POLICE BOX" all around. They've also the windows and door to consider. And then there will be the non-trivial task of carting the Tardis from the Farm to Starkvegas. And folks wonder why Country Mice need trucks. Clearly, it's to facilitate the activities of City Mice. Duh.

~~

They sure did seem to like that quail & wild turkey pot pie we had for supper this evening. And I hear tell they're spending the night.

Out, damned spot! Out I say!

My comments to a friendly spammer:
Hi would you mind stating which blog platform you're using?
Not at all, dude. I use Blogger. My blog's address is Bigfoodetc.blogger.com. The Blogger part should give you a clue.
I'm going to start my own blog in the near future but I'm having a tough time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
Not my problem.
The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and
I use a semi-modified "simple" blogger design that's undoubtedly used and modified similarly by others. Also, should be "seem" not "seems."
I'm looking for something completely unique.
"Different than most"-- not all-- but you want to be unique just as my blog is?
P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask! Here is my weblog:
Not a problem. But let me get this straight. You want to start your own blog in the near future and you want me to visit you blog right now. Cool.
Remember all those monkeys sitting in front of computer keyboards just waiting to type out Macbeth or The Great American Novel? Now we know how that's gonna turn out.

Now we know.

It's a Wrap | The Dinner Party

Miss Diane Keaton was seated between Lavar Burton and Alan Alda, and the three empty seats were filled:

Les Stroud (musician, filmmaker, survivalist; Kat)
Thomas Homer-Dixon (professor, etc.; Tony)
J.L. Austin (philosopher; A. Leland)

So we have successfully concluded the Dinner Party Game!

If nothing else, playing the Dinner Party Game kept us out of trouble for 12 whole days!
Thanks for playing along with us!!

Eveyrone is Seated

I'll post the seating chart just as soon as I've finished watching Saturday morning cartoons!
