Open Windows

It's the First of March. It's warm.

I think I've adjusted the complex system to allow for optimal over-night airflow.

Elements of the system:
  • 2.5" wood Venetian blinds
  • sheers
  • "energy-saving" flannel lined drapes that extend to the floor
  • wooden pole rods hung at ceiling height and extending about two feet-- L-R-- beyond the window
  • windows
At issues is a room in the northwest corner of the house. Most of the windows face north. In the Dead of Winter the room only gets a few hours of late afternoon sunshine through one west-facing window-- and not even that since the installation of all of the above. In the Summer we wake up early, if I've forgotten to shut the blinds and pull the drapes.

In the Spring and Fall, though, I can adjust the complex system to within a scintilla of what's required for sleeping perfection.

Tonight, the north-facing window is about 1/2 open and the blinds are open and up about 1/4 of the way and the sheers are closed. And the bathroom window is open.

I go into all of this detail for a reason. How much thought do people put into heating and cooling their homes? I'd bet most almost none aside from adjusting the thermostat.

It wasn't until we put our Cincinnati house on the market that we even bothered to put in window unit A/Cs. We just adjusted various elements of the system. And we survived!
