Who here remembers the seat of your pants light speed to sound speed to distance conversion factor, with respect to lightening & thunder and miles?
See a flash. Start counting, "One Mississippi, two Mississippi... " Hear the thunder. The number of Mississippis you've counted to between the flash and the thunder = the number of miles away from the lightening strikes you are.
It's good enough for government work.
A nice storm rolled through here this evening. I had opened a window. We could see it coming.
